Valentine's Day Sketch

Sketch

Valentine's Day

This sketch portrays the idea of nerds being socially awkward for a couple of reasons.  First, the fact that he is resorting to sending out viruses to the girls who rejected him, demonstrates how he cannot even talk to the girls face to face about the issue.  And second, this sketch kind of makes fun of how nerds never have girlfriends, which is probably due, mostly, because of their lack of social skills.  The fact that he would even take the time to send out the viruses clearly makes him a nerd, when he could be socially interacting instead.  The sketch portrays the nerd's enjoyment from what he is doing but if he was socially aware, he also would know that sending out the viruses will not solve anything.  This is not a good way to make friends either; it will only end up making his social life even worse.  From the way the sketch is drawn, there is only him and his computer, and nothing surrounds him.  This also shows his isolation from the rest of the world.  Even his speech bubble demonstrates how although he is talking, he is not actually talking to another person.  The artist chose to use a speech bubble instead of a thought bubble for a reason, and it seems like it is meant to show how he is socially lacking.  Also, the reference to Valentine's Day is ironic because it is the one holiday that specifically deals with a social relationship.

The Amazing Spider-man

The Amazing Spider-man

Awkward Scene

This clip is from The Amazing Spiderman movie, where the main character, Peter Parker is a socially awkward nerd attempting to ask his high school crush, Gwen Stacy, out on a date.  This scene clearly illustrates the idea of nerds as socially awkward for various reasons.  For starters, Peter mumbles the words 'uhh' and 'uhm'  countless times in the short span of less than a minute.  He is also having a difficult time talking in complete sentences.  For example, he begins by saying "I don't know, we could uhh...or we could do something else", not finishing his thoughts.  Their entire conversation consists of random words and phrases with no main idea fully getting across.  Not only is his awkwardness represented in the way he speaks, but also in his stance and constant fidgeting.  With his hands in his pockets, difficulty maintaining eye contact, scratching his ear, and repeatedly lifting his foot as he is unable to stand still, Peter exemplifies the typical nerd; he is represented as someone who has trouble talking to people, especially a girl who he likes.  Once Gwen agrees to hang out with him, he then goes on to say, "I can't right now", almost expressing that he cannot fully commit at this moment; the expression on his face is a mixture of happiness and disbelief.  It exemplifies how this situation is new to him, and the idea of him hanging out, or even talking to a popular girl such as Gwen is baffling.  The interaction between the two characters is so awkward that it actually seem to make the viewer feel uncomfortable, not understanding how it can be that difficult to socially interact with another person.

White and Nerdy Music Video

White and Nerdy

Music Video

The music video of the song, White And Nerdy by Weird Al does a good job illustrating nerds as socially awkward multiple times through the video.  It begins with the nerd mowing the grass and sees these two gangsters drive up near his house.  Waving to the gangsters as though he is best friends with them and stumbling across his lawn to shake their hands (an awkward way to greet a friend), the nerd is rejected as they drive away looking at him in a disgusted sort of way.  At one point, he is giving what appears to be his mom a present, which turns out to be an extension cord and her face shows disappointment, almost disgust even.  Most people understand that giving someone a gift should be something they would like, not that you like.  Then it later shows him spending his night hanging out with rolled up bubble wrap.  Having to compensate having friends by hanging out with an inanimate object clearly goes to show that he has trouble making friends.  Moreover, the entire rap is sung by this nerdy kid, and everything he does to try to fit in with the gangsters he thinks is cool, but it only ends up making his social life even worse.

White and Nerdy Lyrics

White and Nerdy

Song Lyrics

They see me mowin'
My front lawn
I know they're all thinking
I'm so White N' nerdy

Think I'm just too white n' nerdy
Think I'm just too white n' nerdy
Can't you see I'm white n' nerdy
Look at me I'm white n' nerdy!
I wanna roll with-
The gangsters
But so far they all think
I'm too white n' nerdy
Think I'm just too white n' nerdy
Think I'm just too white n' nerdy
I'm just too white n' nerdy
Really, really white n' nerdy

First in my class here at M.I.T.
Got skills, I'm a Champion of D&D
MC Escher that's my favorite MC
Keep your 40
I'll just have an Earl Grey tea
My rims never spin to the contrary
You'll find they're quite stationary
All of my action figures are cherry
Steven Hawking's in my library
My MySpace page is all totally pimped out
I got people begging for my top 8 spaces
Yo I know Pi to a thousand places
Ain't got no grills but I still wear braces
I order all of my sandwiches with mayonnaise
I'm a whiz at minesweeper I can play for days
Once you see my sweet moves you're gonna stay amazed,
my fingers movin' so fast I'll set the place ablaze
There's no killer app I haven't run
At Pascal, well, I'm number 1
Do vector calculus just for fun
I ain't got a gat but I got a soldering gun
"Happy Days" is my favourite theme song
I can sure kick your butt in a game of ping pong
I'll ace any trivia quiz you bring on
I'm fluent in JavaScript as well as Klingon
Here's the part I sing on

They see me roll on, my Segway!
I know in my heart they think I'm
white n' nerdy!
Think I'm just too white n' nerdy
Think I'm just too white n' nerdy
Can't you see I'm white n' nerdy
Look at me I'm white n' nerdy
I'd like to roll with-
The gangsters
Although it's apparent I'm too
White n' nerdy
Think I'm just too white n' nerdy
I'm just too white n' nerdy
How'd I get so white n' nerdy?

I've been browsing, inspectin'
X-men comics you know I collect 'em
The pens in my pocket
I must protect 'em
my ergonomic keyboard never leaves me bored
Shopping online for deals on some writable media
I edit Wikipedia
I memorized "Holy Grail" really well
I can recite it right now and have you ROTFLOL
I got a business doing web sites
When my friends need some code who do they call?
I do HTML for them all
Even made a homepage for my dog!
Yo! Got myself a fanny pack
they were having a sale down at the GAP
Spend my nights with a roll of bubble wrap
POP POP! Hope no one sees me gettin' freaky!

I'm nerdy in the extreme and whiter than sour cream
I was in AV club and Glee club and even the chess team!
Only question I ever thought was hard
Was do I like Kirk or do I like Picard?
I spend every weekend
at the renaissance fair
I got my name on my underwear!

They see me strollin'
They laughin'
And rollin' their eyes 'cause
I'm so white n' nerdy
Just because I'm white n' nerdy
Just because I'm white n' nerdy
All because I'm white n' nerdy
Holy cow I'm white n' nerdy
I wanna bowl with-
the gangsters
but oh well it's obvious I'm
white n' nerdy
Think I'm just too white n' nerdy
Think I'm just too white n' nerdy
I'm just too white n' nerdy
Look at me I'm white n' nerdy!

The lyrics to the song, White And Nerdy by Weird Al discuss the idea of nerds having difficulty in social situations.  There are multiple references to stereotypical nerdy things such as comic books, Dungeons and Dragons, and calculus, to describe the average nerd, so the lyrics can then go on to explain why for these reasons they do not have friends.  For example, one of the versus says, "my rims never spin to the contrary, you'll find they're quite stationary" meaning that he has a car that never seems to go anywhere.  From this, you can infer he does not have any friends he hangs out with.  Then it later states, "spend my nights with a roll of bubble wrap".  From the fact that this nerd has to use bubble wrap to compensate for hanging out with another person, you can understand that his lack of social skills impairs him from making friends.  It later says, "I spend every weekend at the renaissance fair".  A typical teenager would not spend his weekends attending the renaissance fair, but instead would most likely be out with his friends.  The overall tone of the song is as though the nerd is trying to prove the gangsters wrong, and that he is cool enough to be hanging out with them.  But he ends up making his case even worse by stating all of the nerdy things he does.  For example, "my MySpace page is all totally pimped out".  In this line, the nerd is trying to be cool, but by using the words 'totally' and 'pimped out', he is only expressing himself as more of a nerd.  From the lyrics, you can understand that the song is basically mocking nerds and their lack of social skills.

The Big Bang Theory

The Big Bang Theory

The Friendship Algorithm

The clip from the popular television show, The Big Bang Theory, is based around the lives of a group of nerdy friends.  In this episode called The Friendship Algorithm, Sheldon is having a difficult time becoming friends with one of his coworkers.  Because of this, he decides to create a formula that he believes will allow him to make friends by following the steps exactly as he has written down.  The simple fact that Sheldon has to take the time to plan out a flow chart consisting of questions such as, "would you like to share a meal?" followed by "what is the response?", portrays his lack of social skills, as the average person would be able to hold a conversation like this without hesitation.  His suggestions are repeatedly rejected, and because of his difficulties with social situations, he questions the man on the phone saying, "what is wrong with you?".  This is clearly not the way to treat someone you are trying to become friends with.  Not only does he become frustrated with the situation, but he asks the person on the phone to hold on while they figure out a solution.  Moreover, he is clueless about what to say once his equation is not working out the way he planned.  Once his friend, Wolowitz, finds a solution, Sheldon insults Wolowitz by acting like he would not be smart enough to discover the solution.  Even Wolowitz then realizes talking like this is most likely the reason Sheldon has trouble making friends as he does not understand how to treat others with respect.  Throughout the entire scene, he is also pacing around the room and stuttering while trying to get his thoughts out through speech in the conversation.  It goes to show that his is not a normal situation for Sheldon and he does not know how to properly go about it, unlike his usual science problems.

Comic Strip

Comic Strip

This comic strip represents a conversation between two nerds, and their thoughts on why they cannot talk to girls.  The very first box explains them "talking awkwardly", even though they are just carrying on a normal conversation as friends.  There are also many references to Pokemon and the Pokedex (the world of Pokemon), common attributes of a nerd lifestyle.  Nerds tend to be lost in the videogame world, too focused on Pokemon and therefore causing them to become socially awkward, especially when it comes to the other gender.  By the end of the comic strip, the characters even agree they cannot carry conversations outside the idea of the Pokemon world without being awkward.  In addition, the way the comic is drawn also coordinates with the idea of nerds having poor social skills.  The sketches of the characters are drawn in a not so perfect way, adding to the awkward effect.  Their facial expressions are odd and atypical, exemplifying how they are socially awkward without even speaking.  The way they are sketched, makes them seem fidgety, with their eyes drawn in a way that makes them look lost in some other world of their own, a possible reason for not knowing how to interact with other people around them.
